Marriage is a very good thing, but I think it’s a mistake to make a habit of it.

W. Somerset Maugham
About This Quote

Marriage is a very good thing, but I think it’s a mistake to make a habit of it. I think the reason this quote has such a strong effect on me is because it is so opposite from the idea of marriage that we have in our minds. That we believe marriage is a very good thing and we should make it a habit to do it. However, considering the problems that come with marriage and thinking it’s a mistake to do it too much can really reduce one’s happiness in life.

It might be love when you get married, but when it’s not working out, you realize too late that you made the wrong choice. Furthermore, when you do make such a huge mistake, all of your friends and family will be against you for doing something like that. This quote reminds me how much easier life can be without marriage.
